The railway connection between Tucumán and the central region of Argentina strengthened the national authority (State presence) in the northern regions and played a key role for the sugar industry development. Although this transitional process has been widely studied in the literature, the analysis has been focused mostly on its overall effects on the sugar industry. This paper offers new insights on this subject, trough the study of the Northwestern Argentine Railroad, a key line for the economic integration. We will analyze the emergence of the "new" sugar region among the central-southern plains of the province. In addition, other issues will be addressed, since this railway reorganized communications and people´s transportation by linking the capital of Tucumán with several towns located along the old commercial roads, and boosted the expansion of different economic activities during this period.
