In this article we propose to address how categories such as “trauma” or “Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder”(PTSD) were put into circulation through psychological care in the case of Kiss (Brazil) and Cromañón (Argentina). It draws on the materials produced as part of our doctoral research, already completed, on the two fires. We suggest that mental health responses to the critical event were interpreted in terms of different perspectives: notions such as “sheltering,” “psychosocial,” and the “political and social character of trauma” were placed in tension with the “pathologising” and “individualising” ways that, according to our interviewees, would be exemplarily embedded in the notion of PTSD. Finally, we suggest that the dissemination and uses of the notions of trauma and PTSD are heterogeneous and are traversed by histories, professional styles, and struggles typical of the regional and national contexts in which these concepts are put into play.
