The aim of the paper is to analyze the degree of compliance with the principle of independence of the auditor of financial statements of SMEs. A normative analysis comparing the provisions of the Codes of Ethics Unified FACPCE and IFAC Code of Ethics was performed. Through an empirical study of the major threats to independence in a sample of CPAs from Argentina, situations of selfreview threats and self-interest are highlighted. This raises the need to assess the requirement for submission of audited financial statements only to large companies and other orders for small entities.
