Technological advances have drastically changed the way we use interior spaces, mainly due to the implementation of self-illuminated screens. This generated a rethinking of the way of designing and evaluating lighting systems. A suggested idea consists in the characterization of the illuminated space as a whole; this entails, on the one hand, the problem of linking it with physical measurements, and on the other, how to quantify visual perception. It is here that we propose an experiment to analyze possible biases in the evaluation of an illuminated space, in terms of spatial brightness, using different scales and reference conditions. The results show that there is a consistent linear relationship between spatial luminosity and luminous flux; that responses using a 7-point scale are more linear compared to responses on a continuous scale; that the range of the scales is better exploited when some kind of reference anchor is used; that when images on a monitor are used as a reference, the answers are overestimated in relation to when real scenes are used; that despite these differences, the general trend of the answers is very similar.
