An experimental nutritional animal model as a methodological strategy to improve the teaching process of biological chemistry Students who solve problems and discuss scientific issues are involved in active thinking. Science is both a theoretical and practical activity, so the laboratory represents a vital space. The objective of the project was to analyze teaching methodologies to improve the assimilation and transfer of knowledge in the context of a real situation, understand theoretical concepts integrating them to the practical activity (PA) and increase the motivation towards science and critical thinking using an experimental model. A total of 1019 students from biotechnology and biochemistry that participated in the Biological Chemistry course were analyzed during the period 2000-2009. Even though the number of promoted students in the area of PA went on decreasing, the final percentages reached (between 60% and 75%) allow us to consider that the didactic methodology adopted has given satisfactory results related to the proposed objectives, both in the number of promoted students as in the quality of acquired knowledge.
