Abstract

This article aims to recover and discuss the denomination of ‘reactionary modernism’ coined by Jeffrey Herf, by confronting it with the successive ideas of two theoretical exponents grouped under it during the inter-war period in Europe. The relevance of the task is not centred on the specific discussion with the author but on showing, through it, the richness and relevance that the positions of the literary Ernst Jünger and the heterodox historian Oswald Spengler have when confronted with the imminent reality of modern technification after the Great War. In view of the effects and repercussions that the book and the category coined by Herf had for the literature on the authors, the aim is to illuminate what the term reactionary modernism conceals, overlooks or simplifies: theoretical considerations on modern technification that are more robust, complex and less linear than the label manages to explain. Overcoming mere apologetic or demonising totalisations of technification, Spengler and Jünger laid the foundations of a century-old discussion that still echoes in the debate today: on the specificity of technification in Modernity, the neutrality of technology, the question of its mastery and the intrigue about the future of the human. After a brief introduction, we will devote the next two sections to the ideas of Ernst Jünger and Oswald Spengler, respectively, showing the changes and shifts that their reflections on technification underwent in the period in question from an analysis based on the textuality of their writings. In this way, we intend to go beyond the considerations that attempt to explain their positions on the basis of a conservative epochal climate, which was inclined towards the rejection of nineteenth-century liberalism, radical nationalism and the ideology of war, leading to the acceptance of modern technology, as defined by Herf.
