The classification of phytoliths usually treats these bodies as isolated morphological entities (Parataxonomic approach) or subordinated to taxonomic categories of living plant (Ortotaxonomic approach). A new descriptive methodology of phytoliths which contemplates both approaches is here outlined, based on the sclerite-scleritome concept and their treatment through sciotaxa categories. Some guidelines for a new classification system are also presented. Piptochaetium montevidense Parodi phytolith assemblages are described to illustrate this new methodology. The leaf, culm, inflorescence and root assemblages are compared with the assemblage of the complete plant. Cluster analysis (UPGMA) and ordination by principal component analysis (PCA) were performed on the data of 49 morphological characters from the five phytolith assemblages. The results agree in the formation of two groups: 1. Formed by the root phytolith assemblage. 2. Formed by the culm and inflorescence assemblages subgroup and the leaf and the complete plant assemblages subgroup. The assemblage of the complete plant has close relationship with the leaf assemblage, and is less related to the culm and inflorescence assemblages. All phytolith assemblages of Piptochaetium montevidense show Arundinoideae affinity.
