Abstract

I analyze the autobiography of Anaïs Vialá, a french immigrant who settled in Pigüé, Buenos Aires Province, as a child. Her writing sheds light on the power relations of the time, recounting in the first person the exploitation in rural work and the sexual oppression suffered by girls and women, in a context in which they were excluded from civil (until 1926) and political (until 1947) rights. Vialá thus joins other women from Buenos Aires Province who questioned the roles and rights assigned differentially to the sexes, and whose voices were inaudible in their time, and forgotten later. First, I study Vialá’s position in relation to maternalism—the definition of woman as mother—which was hegemonic in her time. Second, I explore her political stance, which emerges from Vialá’s explicit denunciation of her legal and economic subordination—her own, personally, and, she adds, that of other women in similar situations. Vialá published her autobiography in 1938, and although at that time feminist groups had been fighting for women’s rights for decades – some of which are the same ones Vialá claims, having personally suffered the legal inferiority established in the Civil Code – she does not mention them.
