The human remains from the Rio Bote 1 site are a new opportunity to study the mortuary record in upper Santa Cruz River basin from ca. 3800 and 3600 yr BP. The aim of this study was to address the formation processes affecting burials in such archaeological site using the taphonomic analysis of the human bone remains. The information from this site and others at southern Patagonia with similar dates points toward the existence of different depositional environments promoting the survival of the remains. At Río Bote 1, the burials present different preservation degrees related to the age and position of the individual burial in the sedimentological substrate.
