Introduction: Low birth weight (LBW) (<2500g) includes infant small for gestational age (SGA) (<P10 Weight/GA) and preterm (≤36 weeks) and the combination of both conditions. We analyzed the regional prevalence of SGA in term and preterm new born (NB) with and without LBW in Argentina in 2013. Material and methods: The data came from the Ministry of Health of the Nation. The births were classified in preterm and term, with LBW and without LBW and SGA with the INTERGROWTH-21st standard and the prevalences of these phenotypes were estimated by regions: Argentine Northwest (NOA), Argentine Northeast (NEA), Cuyo, Center, City Autonomous University of Buenos Aires (CABA) and Patagonia. Results: Of all SGA children (n = 41,039), 84.5% (n = 34,667) were born at term, of which the highest percentage did not present LBW. This trend is repeated in almost all regions, observing the highest values in Patagonia and the lowest in Central. In Argentina, 4.7%, 0.9% and 2.3% of the NB were at term SGA, preterm SGA and term SGA/LBW respectively. Conclusion: LBW is a frequently used epidemiological indicator that does not allow to disaggregate RN according to GA. The identification of SGA term NB with and without LBW would provide new information of epidemiological importance for the assessment of intrauterine growth and its impact on the morbidity and mortality of the NB.
