The article analyses the emergence and resonance of private property in the legal and ideological field in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) between 1978 and 2020. The paper begins by highlighting the set of legal reforms that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) promoted to incorporate the right to private property into its legislation. From this general reconstruction, the paper analyses the ideological ambiguity of ‘market socialism’, oscillating between the sinisation of Marxism and the sinisation of neoliberalism. In order to make the phenomenon more intelligible, the grid of governmentality analysis is incorporated, from which the tactical moves of the CCP to promote the development of capitalist productive forces while strengthening public property are observed. The combination of liberal, socialist and neoliberal elements tried out by the CCP would herald the emergence of a new art of government.
