In this paper I explore the shift from an interest in the social struggle for recognition to the primacy given to the problem of freedom that structures the work of the contemporary social philosopher Axel Honneth. I also consider whether this problem can be a valid object of concern for Critical Theory of society, and comment on the possible futures of this century-old tradition of thought. To this end, I proceed in three steps, via a reconstruction of the treatment of the question of freedom in the context of the so-called Frankfurt School (1), an analysis of the aforementioned passage in the context of Honneth’s work (2), and a speculation, in the form of a prognosis, on the future of Critical Theory (3).
