Resumen

The aggregation of conspecifics in the invasive shrimp, Palaemon macrodactylus could be driven by either patchy environmental conditions or conspecific attraction. This study aimed to determine whether the observed grouped distribution in natural conditions results from gregarious behaviour and the type of cue used by shrimp to locate conspecifics. Four experiments were conducted in which a focal shrimp was given the choice between a zone with cues of conspecifics or an empty zone. The cues permitted in each experiment encompassed visual and chemical cues, exclusively visual cues, exclusively chemical cues and a control devoid of any visual or chemical cues. The results indicated that focal shrimps exhibited a preference to conspecific zones when exposed to chemical cues alone or in combination with visual cues. However, visual cues alone were insufficient to induce grouping with their peers. The value of this trait is discussed along with other behavioral characteristics of the species as a possible explanation for its success as an invader.

Métodos

The presence of a preference for either the shrimp cues zone (the area with shrimps or shrimp cues) or empty zone (the equivalent zone without cues) was tested for each of the four experiments using a general linear model (GLMs) with quasibinomial error structure to correct for overdispersion. The response variable was the ratio of time spent in the cues-provided zone to the combined time spent in both the cues-provided zone and the empty zone (Evans et al., 2007), with sex as fixed factor. If a tendency toward one of the zones was detected (intercept P value <0.05), a positive intercept estimate indicated a preference for the cue zone and a negative value a preference for the empty zone. All statistical analyses were performed using R Software (version 3.6.1) (R Core Development Team, 2020). We plotted the means and variances of the transformed data according to the requirements of the analyses and model estimates used.
