This article examines the place given to female characters in Jean-Georges Noverre’s tragedy-ballet. In the pantomime ballet of the 18th century, patriarchal domination is symbolically established through the characterization of female roles as embodiments of an unfinished civility. The passionate female dancers of the Noverrian tragedy are always in conflict with the institutions: the Family, the Church, the State. But, paradoxically, they themselves represent the expressive ideal of the ballet d’action, raising the question of to what extent the expressive gesture of the Noverrian dance serves the symbolic domination and the patriarchal system.
