Text comprehension involves the construction of a coherent and cohesive representation that includes information from the text and from the listener’s prior knowledge. In order to process it, different knowledge and skills are required, such as vocabulary, comprehension of the text structure, monitoring and inference generation. In the vocabulary dimension, breadth and depth are related to inferences making process and comprehension. This study aimed to analyze the role of inference generation and vocabulary knowledge (depth) in oral narratives comprehension in children aged 3 to 6 years. Participants were tested with a standardized vocabulary test and watched three videotaped stories narrations. Then, they answered a questionnaire with three literal and three inferential questions for each story. A regression analysis was performed and an interaction effect was found between vocabulary and the generation of inferences. In the analysis of the interaction, it was found that participants with lower vocabulary performance are dependent on their inference generation skills for comprehension, and those who generate fewer inferences are relying on vocabulary knowledge for comprehension.
