This article analyzes common-sense notions of gender identity and family diversity among middle-class families in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, interviewed during 2023. We adopt a feminist phenomenological perspective in order to analyze how these notions are constituted as embodied, situated, and affective experiences within the life-world. The findings reveal a limited conceptual clarity regarding gender identity. Some responses express discomfort with the question, taking for granted its correspondence with sex assigned at birth, while others refer to sexual orientation, binary stereotypes, or structural relations of oppression to explain their own gender identification. Regarding family diversity, in line with previous studies, we observe an expansion of its definition within common sense, coexisting with representations of LGBTIQ+ families marked by a certain distance—both socially and in terms of identification. Finally, we reflect on the scope of these findings within the current Argentine context, traversed by a regressive turn in the rights agenda.
