This article addresses artistic research from the perspective of audiovisual practice, with a focus on animation. It proposes the research-creation-research (R-C-R) formula to reflect on how artistic creation can constitute an ontological object, a mode of knowledge production, and a research praxis. The central axis is the notion of materiality, understood as the foundation of research on/for/in art and as the instance that traverses and organizes creative processes. The paper examines the specificity of know-how in art and how this practicebased knowledge reconfigures traditional academic modes of research. It also explores how material and technical decisions generate meanings, establish situated epistemes, and shape methodologies specific to the artistic field. Drawing on the example of La Plapla (Walsh, 1967), it illustrates how certain artistic objects demand the construction of knowledge. Finally, it argues that the reflexive return after creation enables the development of critical knowledge, reaffirming the place of art as a legitimate and singular research practice.
