This article examines the problem of ideology in the early work of Jacques Rancière through his encounters and divergences with Louis Althusser and Michel Foucault. First, it reconstructs Rancière’s polemic with Althusserian theory and the conceptual shift it entails. In this movement, Foucault’s influence proves crucial in moving beyond a unilateral and reproductive conception of ideology. Neverthe-less, Rancière does not fully adopt the power-resistance framework characteristic of Foucault’s technologies of power. Instead, he outlines a research project on the “materiality of the ideologies of revolt” within the history of the workers’ movement, focusing on practices of struggle and forms of experience that are irreducible both to the structure/superstructure model and to a purely reactive logic in relation to power.
