This paper sets out to investigate the birth and evolution of three key concepts of the Inter-American human rights system: Democracy, Rule of Law and Human Rights, concepts that in the jurisprudence of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and much of the legal doctrine, are interconnected within the scheme of the inter-American human rights system; however, these three concepts are not logically derived from each other; rather, this interlinkage can only occur through an interpretative effort that, in addition, requires the concrete action of the States to have effective validity.
