This article intends to analyze the exile imaginary that the press transported during the Spanish transition (El País, La Vanguardia, Triunfo, ABC) while the Republicans exiles were returning and when the Argentines pursued by State terrorism became a social and even legal problem for the Motherland. It’s analyzing, from a number of outstanding republican political and cultural figures (Luis Seoane, Rafael Alberti, Claudio Sánchez Albornoz, Joan Corominas, Joan Cuatrecasas, Federica Montseny, Dolores Ibárruri, Santiago Carrillo, Josep Tarradellas, among others) were returning to Spain –with special attention to those who lived through Franco’s persecution in the Argentina Republic–, to what extent exile had ceased to be a possible political alternative to dictatorship, to become in terms of memory, tribute or recognition, without therefore having lost the political conflict that marked the withdrawal after the fall of the Republic.
