While addressing the academic profession as an object of scientific study is still incipient, this exploratory work proposes an approach to representation that a set of academics from the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences (from now on, FCEyS) of the National University of Mar del Plata (UNMdP) have of the aforementioned construct. A qualitative methodology was used, through the conduct of eight (8) interviews and twenty-nine (29) structured interviews with teachers with different charges (ie. teacher, assistant), dedication (ie. simple, partial, exclusive), and area performance (ie. Administration, Accounting, Economics, Tourism and Cs. Social). The study conducted made it possible to view, although in a preliminary way, the heterogeneity that characterizes the academic profession in the FCEyS of UNMdP, having identified a set of categories of analysis that can contribute to the definition of the job profile of the academic professional both perceived and required. The previous diagnosis allowed for conclusions about the overall representation that all individuals considered have of the aforementioned construct, and could discriminate those categories in which greater consistency and dissent between groups were observed.
