Web APIs facilitate access to a variety of resources and services and, as such, they have become a cornerstone of modern application development over the years. This has led to a highly competitive market, in which usability is key for success. Although the subject of web API usability has been explored in the literature, there is a notable scarcity of studies concerning usability models for this kind of APIs. Because of this, in this article we propose a GoalQuestion-Metric model—with six Goals, eight Questions, and 45 Metrics—to facilitate and standardise web API usability assessment. We validated this model with a group of seven experts, and the results obtained indicate that the model is thorough and has the potential to improve web API usability.
