Starting from a lawsuit filed in 1791 with the “cabildo” of Montevideo against a storekeeper who had accepted stolen rawhide, this paper analyses two aspects of cattle hideproduction in the River Plate in the late 18th century. Firstly, the lawsuit is examined asa part of an attempt by a group of economic agents to gain control over the circulationof rawhide that was flooding into the city of Montevideo. Secondly, the proceedingsincluded in the lawsuit are scrutinised in order to obtain an insight into thecharacteristics of clandestine cattle slaughtering and skinning, the role played by thecentral goods store as the starting point in the cattle hide trade and, finally, thedifficulties encountered in controlling these activities in the River Plate countryside.
