The article suggests both the continuity and difference between the medieval legal and political idea of the king’s two bodies and the liberal monarchical–constitutional idea of the neutral power developed by Benjamin Constant. The reason to go back to a legal and political analysis from the Late Middle Ages, is that, in the light of it, the meaning of Constant’s account of the neutral power could be better understood. One of the main implication of this theory is the aesthetical and symbolic conversion of power to the detriment of its political nature.
