This article makes a critical review of the work of sociologist Michael Burawoy to think about three key theoretical-methodological issues in the social sciences: the relationship between theory and empiry through his proposal of reflective ethnography (and the "extended case method"); the way in which scientific knowledge is constructed by investigating the problems that emerge in political sociology and Marxist theory in the light of the methodology of research programmes and the role of social scientists in the world by reconstructing his proposal of an "organic public sociology" and the debates that it raises in the contemporary panorama of critical theories.
