In the field of the literary translations, the knowledge –almost always labored and conjectural– of the underlying model that acted as the exemplar for the translated version is of great importance since many of the textual characteristics of that translation may not be due to the freedom or the inventiveness of the translator but to the particularities of the copy that he relied upon for his task. A recent study (Casais, in press) has shown that the Estoria de Merlín (Ms. Salamanca, University Library, 1877 [1469-1470], folios 282v-296r), a translation of the initial sixteen chapters of the Roman de Merlin by Robert de Boron (beginning of the 13th century; Micha, 2000), offers readings that only a specific sector of the French textual tradition brings, namely, the mss. of the families y3 , z1 , z3 , and z4 (Micha, 1958). This article will propose some preliminary notes regarding the practical consequences that the identification of such mss. as the presumed underlying models entails for the project of critically editing the Estoria de Merlín again, almost a century after the appearance of the only complete edition published to date (Pietsch, 1924-1925).
