Urera altissima L. is a native plant of the Argentinean provinces of Jujuy, Salta and Tucuman between, 300-900 meters of altitude. The aim of this study was to characterize the anatomy of stems and roots of U. altissima in the province of Tucumán. We worked with material fixed in FAA and conventional anatomical techniques were used. The cross sections of the stem and root show gradual changes in the anatomy of these organs. At the apex, both caulinar and radical, the secondary growth is typical; in remote areas an atypical growth is observed with production of parenchymal packages in the xylem, while in proximity to the neck, the secondary growth is again typical. Atypical formation of parenchyma packets has two origins, one from cambial activity, and other from the dedifferentiation of fibers. The environment where this species grows would be one of the factors that induce the formation of these parenchyma packages, which would provide flexibility to the plant at a given time of its growth.
