In this article, the prevalence of food insecurity in 11 Latin American and Caribbean countries, grouped by level of human development, is estimated and compared. The link between sociodemographic factors and mild, moderate and severe food insecurity is examined and the structural differences between countries are taken into account, on the basis of microdata from the Gallup World Poll and the Food Insecurity Experience Scale of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The results show that 40% of the population studied live in households facing some degree of food insecurity, 14% in its most extreme form. The link between demographic factors and food insecurity varies according to the level of human development, underscoring the need for implementation of differentiated strategies to formulate more effective and localized policies in the region.
