Okra gum in drug delivery

Abstract

Okra gum from nature to bedside: Plant-based polymers are an interesting source of materials that could be applied in various pharmaceutical products. In this sense, Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench, also known as Okra, has taken part in this trend since its pods contain polysaccharides that may serve as hydrophilic polymers in drug delivery. This chapter will be devoted to Okra gum, its extraction and production, chemical and physical characteristics, recent applications in the pharmaceutical industry, and future developments.
