The objective of this article is to explore the relationship between politics and history in the thought of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. This relationship is fundamental to the author’s writings, especially in The Adventures of a Dialectic. Political life is understood through a logic of recognition and conflict, which is intimately linked to a dialectical understanding of history. In this regard, the relationship between politics and history is fundamental; so much so that Merleau-Ponty warns of the dangers of a teleological vision in which history is realized in an absolute manner. This would simultaneously mean the end of history, the end of politics, and the institution of terror. In this article, we are also interested in bringing Merleau-Ponty’s thought into play with issues of contemporary political and social philosophy.
