The electoral system is an explanatory variable frequently used in Political Science to try to find explanations for changes in party systems. The objective of this article is, first of all, to make a brief theoretical outline of the main lines of discussion on the subject, and, secondly, a more empirical approach in which the last three presidential elections and parliamentary elections in Paraguay will be explored in a comparative manner, in order to discuss and put to the test some theoretical proposals previously described. After reviewing the data, we have found that, to a certain extent, the electoral system impacts in some way the number of seats reached by traditional parties. However, to obtain more complete explanations of the political system, a single look is not enough; we will also have to look at historical and contextual patterns.
