This article analyses the potentialities and limits of two youth orchestra projects to influence some aspects of the young participants’ lives: their representations, practices, subjectivities, identities and horizons of expectations for their future. For that purpose, two case studies were conducted in two youth orchestra projects developed in disadvantaged neighbourhoods of the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, each of which involved one year of participant and non-participant observations, 22 in-depth interviews (with young people, their parents, project teachers, coordinators, etc.), document and media production analysis from those projects. The research points out that there are different and heterogeneous appropriations, not only of the orchestral practice, but also of the space built by each project. It also shows how these orchestras help disadvantaged young people to build aspects of their identities. Finally, the article analyses how participating in these orchestras can influence young people´s biographical projects and under which circumstances this seems to be taking place.
