Here we describe the history of mammalogy in Argentina, from the time of arrival of the early naturalists, travelling together with the colonizers of America in the 16th century to present. Also we analyzed and described the influence of foreign scientists and the appearance of outstanding personalities of local mammalogy, as well as the emergence of research groups, and the impact of political actions on the development of this science in different times. We underline the importance of museums holding collections of mammals, and the way they have been growing over time, from its foundation to the present. Finally, we describe the birth of the SAREM (Argentine Society for the Study of Mammals) as a nucleating organization of researchers in mammals throughout the country, and its influence on the emergence of other Latin American societies, as well as the RELAM (Latin American Network of Mammalogy).
