Though we have witnessed the decline of the system for classifying cultural areas, the labels persist in academia. By first verifying the validity, which runs parallel to strong questioning, we examine the construction of the Andes and Mesoamerica as research subjects. We analyze their association with the concept of civilization and the extent to which their study calls for an interdisciplinary approach. We reconstruct the historical development of the Andes and Mesoamerica areas, evaluate the relevant debates and consider attempts to foster comparative or joint treatment. We propose redefining the Andes and Mesoamerica as entities under constant construction that tell us about the realities they reference as well as about the academic community that utilizes the classifications. Consequently, we argue that making the classification objective improves the capacity for dialogue among researchers and contributes to the advancement and complexity of our knowledge.
