The increase in life expectancy has posed a new social and medical challenge: aging, which negatively affects quality of life. It begins with the activation of signaling pathways in cells, resulting in the loss of normal functions and harmful effects in the cellular microenvironment. The accumulation of senescent cells leads to chronic inflammation and tissue deterioration, increasing frailty and the risk of mortality in older adults. Research in anti-aging therapy has identified promising strategies, such as gene therapy, pharmacological interventions, and cell-based approaches, aiming to rejuvenate senescent cells, eliminate non-functional ones, and block aging-related signaling pathways. More studies are needed to understand their efficacy and safety in humans. Understanding the mechanisms of aging and developing effective therapeutic interventions is essential to improve the quality of life of the aging population. International organizations emphasize the importance of addressing aging and old age from a comprehensive and multidisciplinary perspective, taking into account the specific characteristics and needs of the older population. Finally, it is essential to consider ethical aspects, which focus on self-acceptance, self-awareness, integration of life experience, transcendence, and gratitude. These fundamental concepts offer an enriching and deeply human perspective on the aging process.
