With the approval of Law 4,031 on the Organization of the National Army, Argentine citizens summoned since 1902 to perform compulsory military service were subjected to medical examinations in the Army. How were these examinations carried out? Who made them? What difficulties existed in its implementation? This article seeks to answer these questions with the objectives of surveying and analyzing the regulations and official documentation on: 1) the medical examination that determined whether citizens were fit to comply with said service; 2) the number of citizens summoned and incorporated and the requests for exceptions processed; 3) the functions performed by military and civilian doctors; (3) the sanctions applied to military doctors when they proceeded irregularly in granting exceptions for illness or physical defect. The period under analysis extends during the first ten years of application of Law 4.031: 1902-1911. We will use the analysis of documentary sources from the Ministry of War, the Army and its General Health Inspection.
