This article analyses two regulatory amendments on the adoption of children introduced in Argentina at the beginning of the 1970’s and at the end of the 1990’s. In particular it examines the meanings surrounding the adoptive relationship and the State’s role in the management of legal kinship during this historical period. To this end I analyze the impact that of the illegal appropriation of children during the period of State-sponsored terrorism times (1976–1983), considering this incident a ‘‘critical event’’ (Das 1995) that made possible a re-definition of the traditional categories associated with the adoption of children. The strategies developed by the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo to achieve the restitution of their grandchildren are explored, and the impact they had on discussions and debates surrounding the legality of such adoptions as well as the powers conferred to judicial and administrative organisms to grant them.
