From the intersection of gender studies and the field of communication sciences, this paper presents an approach to the analysis of the representations of gender, State and citizenship that are legible in the legislative debates around the approval of the Law on Voluntary Termination of Pregnancy in Argentina in 2020. The socio-semiotic discourse analysis method is implemented in sources of documentary information from the shorthand versions of the legislative sessions. The results reveal a polarized representational construction: between world images of the gender category from a plural approach, of the State as a guarantor of rights and the construction of an inclusive citizenship; in opposition to the representation of the punitive State and a "pro-life" nation with a citizenship restricted to conservative values according to the status quo. This responds to the conditions of production of the speeches anchored in a situation crossed by strong disputes in the public, political and media agenda between feminist activism in favor of the legalization of abortion identified with green handkerchiefs and opposition groups calling themselves "in favor of two lives” identified with light blue handkerchiefs.
