This article examines the working conditions, challenges, and dynamics shaping literary production among contemporary writers in the cities of Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Writers represent a paradigmatic case of the dual movement of professionalization and precarization characteristic of cultural sectors at an international level. Additionally, low levels of codification of the writer's profession reinforce the importance of informal practices that regulate literary life and its material conditions of exercise. There is a gap in the understanding of the social, material, and symbolic foundations of current literary production in the region, as well as the specific dynamics of artistic and cultural work. This article aims to make a contribution in both directions. For this purpose, we conducted a survey that reached 147 writers. Among the results, the extended presence of the "double life" stands out, where writing occupies a marginal place among occupations that provide economic support, gender disparities in terms of publications and recognitions are revealed, the relationship between writers and the editorial world is explored, highlighting the inherent tensions in cultural markets that often do not recognize or adequately remunerate work. This research contributes to broader discussions about the value, recognition, and labor conditions in artistic and cultural work in contemporary societies.
