Resumen

This dataset contains part of the raw data collected as part of an undergraduate thesis titled “Percepciones del conflicto producción ovina-puma (Puma concolor) en sectores ganaderos de la provincia de Córdoba: tolerancia vs evidencia” by then undergraduate student and current Biól. Yamila A. Ruffener, supervised by Dr. Daniela M. Tamburini and Dr. M. Carla Lábaque. The research was conducted at the Centro de Ecología y Recursos Naturales Renovables (CERNAR) - Instituto de Investigaciones Biológicas y Tecnológicas (IIByT - CONICET) - Facultad de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales (FCEFyN), Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (UNC), Argentina. The data in the attached tables correspond to the responses from interviews conducted between October 2021 and September 2022 with sheep farmers in Córdoba province, focusing on livestock predation by pumas and their level of tolerance toward this species. For ethical and confidentiality reasons, all responses have been duly anonymized. The interview questions are also included.

Métodos

Methodology: Between October 2021 and September 2022, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 38 sheep farmers across the province of Córdoba. Since the work began in 2021 with the restrictions imposed by COVID-19 pandemic, these interviews were carried out via various virtual platforms -including video and phone calls-tailored to the availability and preferences of each participant. Each interviewee was informed of the research objectives and provided informed consent for the use of the data obtained, in accordance with the Code of Ethics of the Latin American Society of Ethnobiology. The questionnaire was designed to assess each respondent’s tolerance toward the puma by examining their perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors. The perception dimension was captured through accounts of: i) knowledge of the puma’s role in the ecosystem, ii) its dietary habits, and iii) the perceived causes of sheep predation. The question regarding why the puma attacks sheep was posed only to those producers who reported livestock losses due to this predator. Their responses were subsequently classified into six categories: i) sheep are easier prey; ii) low abundance of wild prey; iii) the puma’s opportunistic nature; iv) teaching its young to hunt; v) hunger, and vi) adaptation to human-altered environments due to habitat loss. Attitudes were assessed through two specific questions. First, respondents were asked about their preference regarding the continued presence of the puma in the region (Yes/No). Responses in favor were classified as positive attitudes, while those opposed were considered negative. Additionally, participants rated the species using a four-point Likert scale: beneficial, neutral, harmful, or highly harmful. Following the previous criteria, these ratings were grouped into two categories: positive (beneficial and neutral) and negative (harmful and highly harmful). Finally, behaviors were evaluated based on the decision to employ lethal measures against the puma.

Tabla de contenidos

Data Structure & Variables (Table 1: Interviewees and tolerance) Interviewee characterization: * ID_sheep_farmer: Unique identifier for each participant. * ID_field: Unique identifier for each field. * Sex: Gender of the interviewee. * Age: Age of the interviewee. Field characterization: * Total sheep: Total number of sheep on the farm. * Inhabited field: Farm occupancy status (“permanently inhabited” by owners/employees, or “occasionally inhabited” visited occasionally by owners/employees). Predation: * Puma_predation: Presence of livestock loss due to puma predation (1 = with puma predation, 0 = without puma predation). Tolerance: * Knowledge of the ecosystemic role: Perceived knowledge regarding the puma's ecological function (Yes = producers who affirmed and indicated knowledge of this information; Limited = producers who affirmed and indicated limited knowledge; No = producers who affirmed and indicated no knowledge). * Request more information: Interest in receiving further information about puma's ecological function (Yes / No). * Persistence: Position on the continued presence of pumas in the region (1 = in favor; 0 = against). Attitude: Rating assigned to the species (B = beneficial; N = neutral; H = harmful; HH = highly harmful). * Lethal_control: Decision to employ lethal measures against the puma (1 = applied lethal control; 0 = did not apply). General Note on Missing Data: Entries marked as “na” (not available) indicate variables that were not recorded during the interview.

Tabla de contenidos

Data Structure & Variables (Table 2: Causes of puma attacks) Data Description: This dataset contains the specific causes attributed to puma predation on sheep, collected exclusively from producers who reported livestock losses due to this predator (n = 25). Since a single producer could mention multiple causes during the interview, each category is presented as an independent column. Variables: * ID_sheep_farmer: Unique identifier for each participant. * Perceived causes of predation (Opportunistic predation; Ease of hunting sheep; Decline in wild prey; Habitat loss; Hunger; Maternal hunting instruction): Six binary categories representing the potential reasons attributed by producers to puma attacks on livestock. Each column corresponds to a specific cause, where “x” indicates the cause was mentioned by the respondent, and a blank cell indicates it was not mentioned.

Otro

Interview Description: Semi-structured interview used during data collection. It includes the complete set of questions from which the variables in Tables 1 and 2 were derived.
