This article analyzes the particular modulation of the Creole man of letters that Servando Teresa de Mier displayed himself to be in his letters to the historian Juan Bautista Muñoz and the Sevillian journalist José María Blanco White. These documents formed a modern locus of lettered enunciation which allowed Mier to edit the knowledge of the Spanish Enlightenment on the New Spain religious tradition and on the American political ability after the institutional crisis of 1808. Mier resorted to the epistolary genre to configure a transatlantic cultural network which provided a new meaning to the vindicating Creole discourse produced during the peninsular colonial system.
