Noise pollution is a serious problem in modern cities. Among different sources of noise that are present in an urban area, traffic noise is by far the most annoying source. It depends on several influential factors such as the vehicle flow characteristics and the architecture of the urban space, which are very dependent on local features. An approach to modeling the acoustic relationships involved in these situations is the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). These are basically special non-linear regression techniques, which allow to relate causes and effects from certain information for a given system. This paper proposes the use of an ANN as a sound prediction model. The generation of the network is made from numerical data obtained from a geometric model, implemented in the program SoundPLAN, for different typical urban configurations. It is shown that the method has a great capacity to approximate the non-linear relationship of the variables involved.
