Valeria Luiselli’s first novel, Los ingrávidos (2011), explores both thematic and formal concerns that also appear in her earlier work Papeles falsos (2010). The novel abandons linear chronology in favor of a fragmented narrative structure that reflects the experience of living in a globalized world. Its migrant characters inhabit an alternate reality shaped by their condition, which, as Moraña (2021) suggests, enables an “exotopic” gaze –a perspective that allows the migrant to perceive the world from a singular vantage point. The narrator, herself a migrant, is a character who does not fully identify with any specific place. This is reflected in a paradoxical relationship to space: private spaces become uninhabitable, while public spaces offer a form of temporary refuge. The characters’ migratory condition also dissolves the boundaries of time, allowing past, present, and future to merge, and enabling the characters to “migrate” across different temporalities. As a result, the novel constructs a sense of temporal simultaneity, linking the lives of its characters through an open-ended chain of connections without a clear beginning or end.
