Llegar a los trabajadores del riel: La campaña del catolicismo social por la ley de jubilaciones ferroviarias (Argentina, 1916-1919)

Abstract

Durante la segunda década del siglo XX, el catolicismo social argentino ensayó nuevas estrategias para ganar posiciones entre los trabajadores. En este contexto, el presente artículo explora las incursiones de los católicos sociales en el mundo obrero ferroviario. Para ello, se focaliza en la campaña que protagonizaron en la ciudad de Buenos Aires y algunas localidades cercanas a favor de la ley orgánica de jubilaciones ferroviarias (Ley 10650), entre 1916 y 1919. En particular, analiza los mecanismos y las demandas que los círculos de obreros, la prensa y los dirigentes católicos movilizaron para promover la creación del retiro ferroviario, así como las polémicas que mantuvieron con los socialistas y los vínculos que establecieron con la Asociación Ferroviaria Nacional. El estudio permite observar que la promoción de una legislación específica para el sector les permitió llegar a los ferroviarios, disputar la influencia de las izquierdas y apoyar el despliegue de una organización alternativa a las sociedades de resistencia.

During the second decade of the twentieth century, Argentine social Catholicism applied new strategies to gain positions among the workers. In this context, this article explores the incursions of social Catholics in the world of the railway workers. To this end, it focuses on the campaign they carried out in the city of Buenos Aires and some nearby localities for the approval of the organic law of railway pensions (Law 10650), between 1916 and 1919. The text analyzes, particularly, the mechanisms and demands that the Catholic Worker Circles, the press, and Catholic leaders mobilized to promote the creation of the railroad retirement, as well as the controversies they had with the socialists and the links they established with the National Railroad Association. The study suggests that the promotion of a specific legislation for the sector allowed them to reach out to the railroad workers, fight the influence of the left and support the development of an alternative organization to the resistance societies.
