This paper presents a review of the archaeological collection obtained in El Cerro, excavated by Boretto and colleagues in the second half of the last century. This site is located on a natural hill on the right bank of the Río Negro River (República Oriental de Uruguay). The stratigraphy observed in recent test-pits indicate that it is a natural elevation consisting in a fluvial sandy bank, with an organic soil in the top. The archaeological context was generated by complex hunter-gatherers, which produced a pottery assemblage known as Goya-Malabrigo. The subsistence shows a strong emphasis on fish and deer. Isotopic studies of human remains reveal a C3 monoisotopic diet, essentially carnivorous. Two radiocarbon dates yielded ages of 1910 ± 50 and 1857 ± 49 14C years BP. making it one of the oldest pottery contexts in the lower Uruguay River. Finally, the archaeological record is compared to that of other nearby sites, framing the discussion in the antiquity and distribution of these contexts in the region.
