This article evaluates the impact of an intervention on the strategies that mothers from a low socioeconomic group use in picture-book reading interactions with their young children. Ten mothers and their children (M = 34.1 months) participated in 12 group picture-book reading sessions (intervention). Maternal linguistic strategies and children's verbal behaviour were evaluated in pretest and posttest picture-book reading assessments. The results show that mothers made use of the support offered in the intervention by effectively exploiting the strategies that stimulate the acquisition of novel vocabulary and concepts and that favour active children's verbal participation, particularly to elaborate information and to formulate open-ended questions.
