With the advance of the military campaigns (1884- 1911) over Chaco, the Franciscan evangelisation project found better conditions to thrive. The Order founded missions in the regions of Chaco (Nueva Pompeya, 1900) and Formosa (San Francisco de Taacaglé and San Francisco de Laishí, 1901). Of the three, Laishí Mission came closest to its intended purpose. It was laid out as a whole educational enviroment in which all moments, spaces and activities had a pedagogical significance. The photographs of the mission comprise the object of this work. In these we can identify situations, spaces, and strategies for instruction. The analysis of the corpus of photographs is complemented by reports from Franciscans and other personnel dating from the first quarter of the mission (1901-1926). These reports as well as input from other investigations allow for the problematization of the photographs, conferring them with new meanings. This article is part of a larger project which intends to contribute to the study of the history of the education among the aboriginal people of Argentine Chaco.
