In May 1810, the installation of “Juntas de Gobierno” first in Caracas and then in Buenos Aires, led to the beginning of a political process that would end in 1824 following the triumph of José de Sucre in Ayacucho, which sealed the independence of South America. This period was characterized by political disputes, social mobilization and fundamentally war. In those years, the stage setting of that war was the Intendancy of Salta del Tucumán and, from 1814 onwards, the Province of Salta, with Martín Miguel de Güemes as one of its main protagonists. In this paper, it is discussed his leadership and the challenges he had to face, as well as the alteration of the social order resulting from the mobilization of the rural population which was the base of his political power.
