Trawl fishing has been a controversial issue for centuries due to fishermen’s protests who used other fishing gear and the discussions about its environmental, social and economic impact. This type of debate emerged in Montevideo at the end of the 19th century when the Pedro Galcerán’s company began to operate with steam boats and large trawling nets. This paper analyses two moments in the conflicts between the fishermen and the Galcerán company. The first one was manifested in the petitions and the fishermen’s strike of 1898, and the second one focuses on the discussions that took place in 1907, when an Argentinean company began to operate with modern trawlers. These debates involved various actors and arguments, ranging from economic and social aspects to different.
