This article reflects on the possibility and relevance of linking Oral History with Ethnography in a complementary way, addressing discourses on the past and observing, at the same time, their implications on the reconfiguration of certain contemporary identities in immigrant groups. The relevance of these discourses lies in their ability to establish ways of remembering or forgetting past events –memories– shaping both narratives and oral accounts as well as associated ritual practices. Providing symbolic meanings and contemporary sense of belonging to those links that the descendants maintain with the migratory past of their ancestors, that is, with the sociocultural representation of the supposed identity as “originative”. In this way, the past discourses on the migratory process experienced are presented as a field of ethnographic study or, in other words, as a particular type of ethnographic memory on said immigration.
